Commonplace

Augustine’s prayer opens in praise, then meets a puzzle he cannot leave alone: “who can call on Thee, not knowing Thee?” Number each way he tries to answer it in the first paragraph. Does the last one settle the matter, or does he simply start calling and let the question lie?

At the close of Book I, Confessions.
